Job Title: Assistant Engineer - Rail & Track Location: Based out of Clyde hub, however majority of work will be on site. At various locations around the network Start Date: ASAP End Date: 31/03/2025 Pay Rate to candidate: $75 - $80 HOURLY PLUS SUPER Hours of work: Please note there will be quite a lot of variability in the roster this person will work, and the pattern of night shifts / day shifts / weekend work will be dependent on work needs. We will plan rosters to the constraints of 8hrs / 40hrs.
Exciting opportunity for a leading Government department, who are looking for a Rail Engineer for a 6-month Contract, with high possibility of an extension. Provide planning, engineering, project management and/or site construction support for projects.
Key Accountabilities
Site supervision of the rail grinding machine / rail milling machine.
Certification of track at completion of each shift.
Representing Gov Department on site as PC rep.
Managing issues and incidents that arise on site.
Planning for delivery of this work, attending relevant meetings, working with stakeholders to get the best outcome & production.
Execute safety responsibilities, authorities and accountabilities consistent with Gov Department safety management system requirements which are defined in SMS document number SMS-02-RG-3058.

Provide field engineering support for Project Management and/or Works Management teams.
Provide assistance to project team members to facilitate the achievement of project objectives.
Establish and maintain positive communication with relevant internal and external stakeholders to facilitate timely and coordinated delivery of projects.
Assist Program Planners, Project Managers and/or Project Engineers in the preliminary and detailed scoping, costing and planning of project works.
Develop and maintain project documentation (eg safety plans, environmental plans, ITPs, quality plans) as required to support Project Management and/or Works Management teams deliver project works.
Participate in project risk management workshops and other risk management activities as required.
Participate in the evaluation of tenders, ensuring the technical merit of all tenders are carefully assessed in the selection of a suitable tenderer.
Undertake data collection including engineering checks and ‘before and after’ field measurements, and present this in an appropriate format to support performance evaluation and decision making.
Provide timely and accurate reports on project progress, risks and issues as directed by the Project Manager or Works Manager to enable assessment of project status and identification of any corrective actions required.
Supervise and/or monitor the performance of work teams, contractors and external partners, and provide performance reports and feedback to the Project Manager in a timely manner.
Assist with the coordination of project defects and omissions close-out, and the capture, measurement and reporting of re-work.
Participate in the handover process for completed works to stakeholders, including the development of handover documents.
Assist in the preparation of post-completion reports at the conclusion of project works to enable evaluation of project performance and effectiveness.
Challenges:
Identification and understanding of issues or problems that arise in project planning and reporting through the comparison of data from different sources to draw conclusions.
Supporting the Project team to deliver and report on projects, by using effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.
Night work and variability of the shifts. Working with stakeholders. Technical track knowledge and track certification.
Stakeholders:
Internal stakeholders, primary will be the project management team who they will work with daily. Variety of other internal stakeholders who manage the network and its various functions.
External stakeholders – contractors delivering the work on site.
Skills:
Extensive experience in track work, with focus on heavy plant, rail profiling machines and resurfacing.
Track certification competencies, driver’s licence. Vehicle will be provided
