Senior Risk Manager – Strategic Second Line Risk Advisory
Location: Sydney CBD | Hybrid Working Model
Circa $180K plus Super

We’ve been exclusively retained by a respected insurance organisation to appoint a Senior Risk Manager into a key second line role with broad influence across the business. This is an opportunity for a commercially minded risk professional to go beyond controls testing and contribute to a risk culture that enables strong decision-making, accountability, and business performance.

Reporting to the Head of Enterprise Risk, the role is responsible for leading risk advisory and oversight across several business functions, with a particular focus on evaluating and improving the control environment. While testing control design and operational effectiveness is part of the remit, the client is looking for someone who can take a more strategic view—understanding emerging risks, surfacing key issues, and applying a pragmatic, risk-aligned lens to controls rather than a compliance-driven or audit-centric approach.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide second line risk advisory to senior leaders across operational and corporate business units.
  • Lead a small team and ensure meaningful engagement across the organisation to uplift risk capability and maturity.
  • Oversee the delivery of a robust controls testing program, assessing both design and operating effectiveness.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of the risk management framework and supporting methodologies.
  • Guide the business in the identification, documentation, and mitigation of key risks, including review of risk registers and incident management practices.
  • Deliver strategic risk insights and quality reporting to executive risk committees and the Board.
  • Contribute to the planning and delivery of training and communications to strengthen risk culture and awareness enterprise-wide.
About You:
You are a strategic and influential risk leader who understands how to embed risk thinking into business operations without losing sight of commercial realities. You may come from a background in enterprise or operational risk, internal audit, or a related discipline, and you bring both strong technical grounding and a collaborative, outcomes-focused approach.

You’ll bring:
  • Extensive experience in a second line risk management role, ideally within the insurance or broader financial services sector.
  • Deep understanding of risk frameworks, controls testing (design and effectiveness), and risk reporting.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and partner across all levels of an organisation.
  • A practical and business-aware mindset—someone who adds value through insight, not just oversight.
  • Team leadership experience or demonstrated capability in coaching and developing others.
