We are looking for a brand new Head of Software Engineering for a leading global organisation within the Financial services sector.  The role is a leader of the Engineering discipline that can not only oversee capability but also effective implementation of DevSecOps practices across the Enterprise and leads the platform strategy.

You will be working closely with the CIO to help create the organisations technology strategy whilst looking after a team of roughly 100+ Software and DevOps engineers.
 
Key responsibilities 
  • Lead the engineering team in the strategy and delivery of platform functionality through a mix of development software and helps the team in achieving and surpassing departmental goals, and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Guides thought leadership with an understanding of both engineering and security needs, develops strategic plans regarding the technical development of software platforms and establishes the business’s technical vision that guides all aspects of software engineering.
  • Collaborates closely with engineering teams in the management and development of strategic planning. Works closely with the user experience practice in designing, developing, and deploying scalable technologies that will lead to increased consumer satisfaction.
  • Drives Knowledge by staying abreast of leading and cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices. They absorb relevant and suitable technology based on the projected benefits to the engineering development departments.
  • Supports the engineering chapter leads in ensuring that systems meet the overall business requirements and standards. Will also report on status of software platform development, operations, quality, and system performance to senior leadership.
  • Oversees the management of the department’s staffing, resources, mentoring, and maintaining a best-in-class engineering practice.
  • Enables their team and plays a leading role in the recruiting activities of the engineering department in order to ensure consistency in departmental efficiency.
  • Oversees the strategic deployment of the departmental resources leading to optimal resource allocation and the smooth and successful development of the platforms.
  • Works with Crew Leaders to ensure the optimal application of engineering resources in order to meet product development and customer requirements and is accountable for the effective implementation of DevSecOps practices across all platforms and teams.
  • Mentors key engineering personnel, assisting in their duties upon request, and constantly promoting the growth of their professional skills, and ensuring appropriate succession planning.
  • Accountable for ensuring all tasks and deliverables adhere to existing technical/quality standards and best practices, including availability, recoverability, obsolescence, cyber security, access management, change control and segregation of duties.
  • Responsible for managing the engineering practice and platform budgets, working with leads and Product Owners to ensure this is aligned with the budget.
Experience Required:
  • 10+ years in engineering & engineering leadership roles, including people leadership, program delivery and risk management.
  • Experience with Agile, Lean, and DevOps culture, practices & tools
  • A proven track record of success in execution of large technology programs and meeting defined goals and objectives.
  • Experience with developer tooling and technologies
  • Experience in contract and vendor negotiation.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of methodologies and practices e.g., Agile, DevSecOps, etc.
  • Knowledge of object-orientated design, service and/or message-based architectures, open-source libraries and frameworks.
  • Knowledge of design patterns
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong financial planning/tracking/forecasting skills
  • Strong planning and implementation skills
  • Extensive engineering or application development experience
This is a newly created role that will report into the CIO. A competitive salary with an annual bonus is on offer.
