Our client, a leading NSW Government Department are looking for a Research Officer to join their team on a 6 month contract. The role can either be on a full-time or part-time basis (eg. this could be a good role for a research nurse who wants some additional work).
 
The purpose of role is to assist with a current project – fetal monitoring linked to neonatal deaths from asphyxia-related causes, aimed at preventing or reducing the likelihood of infant deaths.

Key tasks include:

  • Review, examination and critical analysis of maternal and infant health records
  • Recording relevant information and analysis in a purpose built database
  • Identification of any critical issues arising from the records and information gathered, including individual and systemic issues, and providing timely advice to staff
  • Analysis of data (with oversight and guidance from staff)
  • Preparation of a draft project report

Skills required:

  • Clinical or research experience in health (preferably in nursing, perinatal or midwifery)
  • Experience working with and interpreting health medical records, including a strong understanding of medical terminology (and acronyms) and clinical coding
  • Attention to detail and experience with data extraction for research and quality improvement projects
  • Ability to review and understand NSW Health policy and guidelines and apply this knowledge to this project
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including working with busy clinicians
  • Ability to work independently as part of a team
 
Key challenges of position:
  • Having regard to accountability, standards, and performance measures. The successful candidate will need to exercise sound judgement, particularly when interpreting information contained in health records
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision to deliver on the key tasks
  • Ability to manage sensitive and complex information / issues, and use well-developed self-care skills
