What makes a good regulatory compliance role?
Is it the opportunity to cover all types of financial services regulators? Having a varied, end-to-end regulatory change role – rather than being pigeonholed into doing the same thing every day? What about working with (and learning from) incredibly friendly, kind, and supportive colleagues who have held senior roles at regulatory and industry bodies like ASIC and the ICA?

The role I am recruiting ticks all the above. You will also work for a general insurance business that arguably has the best, most modern offices in Sydney – where there is a completely relaxed dress code and a friendly work environment where the CEO will know your name and ask you how your weekend was. Also, you only need to go into the office 1 or 2 days a week.

If you are a regulatory compliance professional in the first 3 – 5 years of your career this is one of the best roles in terms of what you will learn and the opportunities it will lead to in the future. You will have exposure to implementing regulatory change across all the main regulators as well as help build frameworks and policies relating to how the business interacts with the ICA.

Ideally, you will come from a regulatory change/engagement general insurance background, but wider financial services is ok as well. You might have a legal background but it's not a necessity – you could also come from a policy or advocacy background (mainly because you need to be able to read and interpret regulatory change and write very well). You will need to be someone who has drive and proactivity about you and the desire to see your ideas for change implemented. If you are the kind of person who needs to operate in a highly structured environment it's not the role for you.

However, if you are the kind of person who dislikes the bureaucracy and red tape of larger organisations, who wants end-to-end regulatory change responsibility on their shoulders and who wants their voice and ideas listened to and implemented this role would be perfect. You will also gain experience in directly interacting with c-suite executives.

Experience Required:
  • 3 - 5 years experience within a regulatory change/engagement, regulatory compliance or regulatory/industry body
  • General Insurance background would be ideal, wider financial services is ok
  • A comprehensive understanding of the financial services regulatory framework and the bodies governing financial oversight and investigation
  • Self driven and autonomous - you need to be comfortable working under your own direction at times
